Pieces of Advice
A very frequently asked question: “Which toothpaste is good?”

The right answer is: “Which toothpaste suits me best?” There is a large variety of toothpastes at our disposal from which we can choose, but are we well enough informed regarding the state of our dental health in order to choose the safest and most advantageous solution? Do not hesitate to ask your doctor what he recommends you during a routine dental visit.

We have to know that tartar control toothpastes do not help removing the calculus; it only prevents its formation. That means you have to visit a dentist for a scaling and a professional brushing. Excessive toothbrushing will not remove the calcareous deposits; these can be easily and painlessly removed with specialized apparatus based on ultrasounds. By verifying the presence of tartar may confirm or infirm whether the right toothpaste was chosen.

Toothpastes for sensitive teeth are for those persons who develop an excessive sensitiveness in teeth – the most frequent cases are those in which the patients suffer from a more or less severe periodontal disease. If only one of your teeth is sensitive to anything cold or sweet there is a possibility that there is a simple caries which cannot be cured only by dental brushing. They are efficient and they help with the purpose they have been created for. However, it is recommended that the sensitiveness of your teeth and gums be verified by the dentist beforehand.

We all have been fascinated by the whitening toothpastes. The toothpastes which have been created with a whitening purpose contain a rather large number of abrasive particles which may affect the teeth and the gums when used on the long run. There have been several cases in which the patients showed gingival retractions due to inappropriate brushing techniques but also due to the toothpaste which contained too many abrasive particles.

Toothbrushing must start during childhood as early as possible. Due to the children’s diet based on sweets and pastry they have to be closely supervised when practicing oral hygiene. At early ages this must be carried out by parents. There are colourful toothbrushes which come in different sizes which are specific to every age, but there are also special toothpastes. Little children’s toothpastes should be fluoride-free so that fluorosis may be prevented in case the toothpaste is swallowed during the brushing.

Avoid using strong-flavoured toothpastes. Due to the minty flavour you will not only reduce the brushing time but you will also feel a false cleanliness and freshness sensation for a short time.

Toothbrushing must be made with toothbrushes with end rounded bristles, do not press too hard and do not use too much paste (generally the necessary quantity should not exceed the size of a pie – to the contrary of what the advertisements show us). More important than the toothpaste are the technique and duration of toothbrushing; it should generally last 5 - 7 minutes. Toothbrushing has to be practiced twice a day.

Therefore, read the instructions on the toothpaste’s package according to what you wish to obtain from your toothpaste, and more important, consult your dentist.
